Bettys granted permission for Harlow Carr redevelopment
Bettys has been granted planning permission to install a new canopy and pergola walkway at its Harlow Carr site in Harrogate.
The old entrance canopy will be replaced, and a new, timber-framed pergola will be constructed to the South of the building.
Bowman Riley Architects, which submitted the plans in November on behalf of Taylors of Harrogate, said the development would make the layout less confusing for customers.
The plans said:
Currently, customers are trying to access the garden café via the shop area on the east side of the building. The proposed pergola will act as a means of wayfinding and redirecting customers towards the main entrance of the garden café on the south side.

The area proposed for the pergola is currently unsheltered.
But the plans state that the structure will have overhead louvres to provide solar shading for customers when queuing up. Plants will be grown between the louvred roof.
The pergola will resemble those at other locations.
The entrance canopy will also be redesigned to better highlight the entrance.
North Yorkshire Council planning officer Sam Fleming approved the plans on Wednesday (January 7), saying:
The proposal represents a well-considered and sympathetic addition that enhances wayfinding and customer experience without harming the character of the site or local distinctiveness.
Bettys has been in partnership with Harlow Carr Gardens since 2004.
The site includes a retail area and a café area.
No additional floor area will be created by the development. Vehicular and pedestrian access will remain the same.
