A fire at an unoccupied building in Ripon last Friday (January 2) was started deliberately.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service this morning (January 8) told the Stray Ferret the blaze, which happened at a unit on North Street, is “being treated as deliberate”.

North Yorkshire Police has launched an investigation and is seeking information to assist officers.

The force said:

The incident is being treated as arson and an investigation is ongoing into the fire. Anyone with any information who has not already spoken to the police should call 101 and pass information for incident 12260000786. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their website.

Firefighters from Masham, Harrogate and Ripon were called to the area just after 12.40pm that day following reports of smoking coming from a building.

Masham Fire Station said crews found the building was “20% alight” when they arrived.

It added:

Crews used six breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and thermal imaging cameras to tackle the blaze. An aerial ladder platform was used to check for fire spread in the roof voids.
