Clintons

Clintons is to close its greetings card shop in Harrogate.

The shop, which has been a mainstay of Cambridge Street for years, was known as Clintons Cards until it rebranded in 2012.

“Store closing’ posters appeared in the window today (May 18). They said the shop was offering 20% off and ‘everything must go’.

Clintons, which was founded in Essex in 1968, has about 140 shops in the UK. The nearest branches to Harrogate are in Leeds and York.

Similar closing down signs appeared at the company’s Wellingborough branch in Northamptonshire three weeks ago.

Clintons impending demise on Cambridge Street further reduces the number of specialist card outlets in the town and will leave a prominent, large retail unit vacant.

Alison and Paul Lucas ran the card, jewellery and gift shop Magpie for 15 years until their retirement in 2019. Originally located in Westminster Arcade, the business relocated to Beulah Street.

Paperchase, which operated on James Street, closed in 2023.

The Stray Ferret contacted Clintons to ask when and why its Harrogate branch was closing and how many staff were affected. We had not received a response by the time of publication.
