Boroughbridge business owner Laura Hutton has made it to the finals of the BBC Radio York Make a Difference Awards.
This award celebrates local community heroes in North Yorkshire and this morning live on Radio York Laura found out she’d become a finalist.
The Stray Ferret spoke to Ms Hutton about the work she does, just after she received the news. She told us:
I do a lot of work with Boston Spa Homeless project, where I’ll just get sent a list of what they’re short of, and I’ll put a collection post on the Boroughbridge Chatter page.
It’s not like it’s just me that does all the work – it’s the community that's been cultivated on this page.
Ms Hutton takes in these collections and holds them in her shop, The Hut Dog Grooming. She told the Stray Ferret:
Everyone in Boroughbridge is amazing. I can put one post on the page and I’ll be absolutely inundated with donations. People just show up at my shop with boxes upon boxes.

Alongside these regular collections, Ms Hutton runs charity car washes and raises money for Boroughbridge football club.
In addition, she runs other annual projects, such as organising Christmas markets for local tradespeople, and making Christmas dinner for older people who would otherwise spend Christmas alone.
Ms Hutton started doing collections over six years ago, when one of the local schools asked for Christmas donations for less fortunate families. The charity work snowballed, and she’s loved helping out where she can ever since.
The final for BBC Radio York's Make a Difference Awards is scheduled to take place in September; an exact date has yet to be announced.
