A mini supermarket in Harrogate has been left with empty shelves, after icy conditions caused a delivery lorry to turn back fully laden.
The vehicle arrived at the Sainsbury’s Local on Cold Bath Road this morning, but could not unload its stock because the shop’s delivery bay is off Somerset Road, a sloping side street still covered in compacted ice.

Employees feared that, even if the lorry could drive into the bay without skidding, it might not make it back up the incline safely.
Workers spread four bags of grit salt, but it takes time to work, so the lorry left without completing its mission.
As a result, the supermarket is now all out of most kinds of fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as much of its chilled food range.
Many of the chilled foods have run out
Employees are said to be expecting a successful delivery tomorrow.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said:
Our Cold Bath Road Local store is temporarily having challenges receiving deliveries. We’re working closely with the council so that we can be fully stocked again as soon as possible and we’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.
In the meantime, customers can shop at our nearby Leeds Road Local and Cambridge Street Local as well as our Harrogate superstore.
