‘We are trapped… the pavement is lethal’

A Harrogate resident has summed up the frustration felt by many at the impact of the ongoing freeze.

The district has been under a blanket of snow and ice since Sunday and there is little prospect of a thaw until the weekend.

Although the main roads have been treated and are largely fine, most minor roads and pavements remain treacherous.

Mike Hodgson, who lives in the Bilton area of Harrogate, contacted the Stray Ferret to say:

We are still effectively trapped in the Knox Lane, Old Trough Way and Old Barber triangle. There is a sizeable population affected here in this area of Bilton.

The pavement is lethal and the roads not much better until you reach the bus route up Knox Avenue which was belatedly gritted. We get no help from the council but effectively subsidise areas that aren’t at the bottom of a steep hill with our council tax.

The next text from North Yorkshire Council will be ‘you’re at the back of the queue for refuse collection or it’s cancelled wait another two weeks’.

This is not the first time this has happened and no doubt not the last unless we could be considered a vulnerable area and graced with 20 minutes of a gritter and snowplough next time.

A council spokesperson said its policy on gritting footpaths could be found here.

Do you think the council should be doing more? Have your say in the comments section below.
