Harrogate bar donates to domestic abuse charity as England is knocked out of World Cup
A Harrogate bar has turned the England football team’s loss last night into a win for a charity that supports survivors of domestic violence.
Paradise Tap & Taco, off Cheltenham Road, has not been showing any of the World Cup matches, but owners Ellie and Josh Molloy were very aware of one of the tournament’s lesser known – and sadder – trends.
Research in 2013 showed that cases of domestic abuse increased by 38% when England lost a match, and by 26% when they won or drew. Even though that data is more than a decade old, women’s aid charities say there are no signs the situation has changed for the better.
With this in mind, Josh and Ellie took to Instagram following England’s 2-1 loss to Argentina last night, and posted:
We've been quiet today. We've not shown the football and England have played in the World Cup Semi-Finals.
Reported incidents of domestic abuse rise by about 38% when England lose, and so if England lost today we wanted to donate any profit we made to Refuge.
Refuge is a national charity that provides specialist support for women and children experiencing domestic violence.
Josh and Ellie continued:
We'll be totally open with you all, we took £1,174 (so we didn't make any profit at all)...
VAT is about £200 of that. The cost of buying in the stuff we sold was £380. Staff wages £330. £90 on rent, and about £100 on utilities, various insurances, subscriptions, PRS/PPL etc...
...that's everything we'd made today gone before we even think about director's wages (paying ourselves?!) OR saving anything to actually grow the business.
Anyway, we were fairly set on the idea, so we've just sent £666 instead, 'cos that's badass. Don't worry – we're profitable on other days!
The response to the couple’s gesture has been immediate and positive. Their post has received more than 4,000 likes and been shared more than 100 times.
Comments ranged from “absolute legends” to “freaking awesome”, and one commenter even said they “teared up” reading the post.
The couple finished their message, saying:
We really hope you'll all take some joy in something positive having come from it all, even if it was at our own expense in the end.
