A Knaresborough pub has been put up for sale, after standing empty since it closed in 2022.

The Wellington Inn, on sale for £325,000, was the last of three Sam Smith’s brewery pubs in the town.

Marketed by Fleurets, the property description states that the building is to be used for ‘non pub use only’.

The historic pub, on Briggate, is Grade II listed, and previously was two houses.

The property spec says the key features include a bar, lounge and kitchen, three bedrooms, a large outbuilding and a car park big enough for eight cars. Pictures also show an overgrown patio garden.

The Wellington Inn is just one of nine pubs recently put up for sale by Sam Smith’s.

The brewery is famous for its old-fashioned pub rules, which include no swearing, no music, and no technology. It aims to encourage people to chat over their drinks.

However, it is speculated that the Tadcaster founded company, up until recently owned by the late Humphrey Smith, often struggled to find managers willing to operate under the strict rules.

There have been cases of sudden dismissal of managers over infractions such as pouring too much beer into a glass and not having Mr Smith’s favourite dessert on offer.

Some beer fans are wondering if, just over two months after Humphrey Smith’s death, the takeover by his son Samual might lead to long-closed pubs either being sold or reopened with more relaxed rules.
