Knaresborough school rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted
A Knaresborough primary school has received a ‘Good’ rating in its first Ofsted report since becoming an academy.
Inspectors praised Meadowside Academy on Halfpenny Lane for the “excellent relationships between pupils and staff".
They said the school “welcomes pupils with care and compassion” and “encourages pupils of all ages to work hard, be kind and respect others.”
The report added:
The way in which the school develops pupils personally, as well as academically, is strong.
The school, which has more than 200 children enrolled, joined the Thirk-based Elevate Multi Academy Trust in 2017. This was its first inspection since then.
The trust has 13 schools, including Knaresborough St John’s C of E primary school and Marton-cum-Grafton Primary School.
The report said:
The school has changed the content of the curriculum and the order in which it is taught to reflect the needs and interests of pupils well. Where this is the case, pupils’ knowledge of what they have been taught over time is less secure.
However, in other subjects, pupils remember learning about a wide range of topics and perform well in external assessments. This has resulted in a carefully planned and ambitious curriculum.
The proportion of pupils with special educational needs who attend Meadowside Academy is above average.
Inspectors said:
Pupils arrive at the school with a wide, and often complex, mix of needs. The school continually explores the best way to meet these needs.
This includes adjustments in lessons, additional adult support and the provision of ‘nurture’ spaces.
The support available to pupils, especially for those with the most complex needs, requires further refinement. Leaders are committed to making this provision exceptional.
Alex Hope, interim executive headteacher said:
We are delighted with the judgement from Ofsted. I am really pleased they saw how caring the school is and how happy the children are, it is a real testament to staff.
We are over the moon, everyone has worked really hard and it is a fitting way to end the school year.
