York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority has received a multi-million-pound funding boost to repair roads across the county.
The Department for Transport today announced an additional £48.7 million worth of funding for local authorities across Yorkshire and the Humber to spend on fixing roads.
Of this, York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority will receive £16.66 million. This is in addition to the £45.5 million previously allocated for highways funding this year.
The funding will be split between City of York Council and North Yorkshire Council, which oversee the county’s highways and their maintenance.
David Skaith, the Labour Mayor of York and North Yorkshire who oversees the combined authority, said:
Potholes are a real problem across our region, that's why improving our roads and pavements is a priority for me. This extra £16.6 million for York and North Yorkshire from government recognises the importance to our communities of better quality, safer roads.
I’m looking forward to working with our delivery partners at City of York Council and North Yorkshire Council to ensure this funding delivers the improvements we need across our region, ensuring our roads support our future growth.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves pledged to spend £1.6 billion on highways maintenance in England for 2025 and 2026.
The Department for Transport said today's announced funding included “built-in incentives”, with 25% of the uplift held back until authorities have shown they are delivering the repairs.
Labour also announced plans to reinvest 50% of surplus lane rental funds into highways maintenance.
The transport department is consulting on devolving powers to approve lane rental schemes, which enable local authorities to charge companies for the time roadworks occupy a road, to local mayors rather than the secretary of state.
Cllr Keane Duncan, who is in charge of transport at North Yorkshire Council, has said he wants to introduce the lane rental scheme in the county next year.
