Plans to build a 30-metre telecommunications tower on Harrogate football pitches have been rejected.
Last month, the Stray Ferret reported EE had submitted plans to build the tower on land at Pannal Ash Junior Football Club at Almsford Close.
But North Yorkshire Council has today (July 21) turned down the scheme.
The project, which also included a 2.1-metre-high palisade fence surrounding the tower, received 80 objections.
One was from Harrogate Town Council, which said the mast and fencing would reduce the openness and usability of a site used for junior football.
Council case officer Melanie Saleem said in her nine-page public decision notice the tower would be "overbearing", “cause an unacceptable level of harm to the character of the local area” and “appear visually dominant and intrusive”.
Telent Technology Services Limited, which submitted the application on behalf of EE, said the tower was required because its existing telecommunications tower at Harrogate College is due to be removed when the college undergoes a £22 million redevelopment.
The proposed tower would have provided 3G, 4G and 5G usage for the surrounding area.
The Stray Ferret has contacted Pannal Ash JFC for comment.
