A planning application has been approved to create a café at Great Ouseburn Post Office.

The proposal, which was submitted to North Yorkshire Council in May, sought approval to convert a residential utility room and courtyard into a café.

The council’s public report on the application explains that the Post Office and shop area are situated on the ground floor of a semi-detached residential property.

The applicant proposed to convert a utility room, which is in an annexe of the property, and courtyard into the café and outdoor seating area.

The courtyard will be accessed by an existing covered archway, which is underneath the first floor of the adjoining property (pictured below).

A small section of the annexe will also be separated to create the café kitchen, and a new door and steps to the outdoor courtyard will be installed.

Little detail has been revealed about the café itself, but the applicant also sought approval to erect a glazed pergola in the courtyard, which would be used as an outdoor seating area for café customers.

The public report said the pergola will be “fully enclosed” to limit noise outbreak, adding it will accommodate around 18 seated customers.

The outdoor seating area will have “limited impact” on the host property and the Great Ouseburn Conservation Area, the report added.

The applicant also proposed to install a new awning on the front door of the Post Office.

The plans were approved last Friday (July 19) subject to conditions, which included limiting the commercial use of the courtyard, pergola and kitched to between 9am and 9pm.

The news comes after the national Post Office announced the Great Ouseburn branch, on Main Street, would close for two months from July 9.

It said the owners were carrying out work on the retail side of the premises, which is used as a village store. The Post Office anticipated this would take around two months to complete.

The plans for the café were not revealed at the time.

Great Ouseburn Post Office is set to re-open on Thursday, September 5, at 9am.

In the meantime, the closest alternative branches are:

• Grafton Post Office, Marton, Marton Cum Grafton, YO51 9QY

• Linton-on-Ouse Post Office, Linton on Ouse Village Hall, Main Street, Linton-on-Ouse, YO30 2AS

• Green Hammerton Post Office, York Road, Green Hammerton, YO26 8BN
