Plans to resurface a church car park in Knaresborough have been submitted to North Yorkshire Council.
Holy Trinity Church on Briggate has applied for permission to resurface the roadway to improve the existing tarmac and adjacent compacted earth and rubble roadway finishes to create a consistent finish around the church.”
The grade two listed church was built in 1866 in 14th century gothic style and has a churchyard with no burials within the grounds.
The churchyard currently has a track surrounding the building where cars can park.

Planning documents state:
The proposal will prevent the future decay of the churchyard ground, which is currently uneven, muddy and at times filled with potholes.
The proposals will also deter people from parking near any of the trees which will protect them from damage.
[There will also be] self-draining gravelled areas will also be incorporated as designated parking spaces to deter parking on the grass areas which will be protected by road curbs. There will be two road gullies adjacent to the kerbs draining into a soakaway.

The improvements will not only improve the accessibly of the site for wheelchair users and push chairs, but will also be a significant aesthetic improvement for the church surroundings.
North Yorkshire Council is yet to adjudicate on the application.
The church is under Faculty Jurisdiction rules, which means the proposal is also subject to approval by the Church of England.
