Plans have been submitted to install a 5G electronic communications base station in Knaresborough.
Cellnex, which provides infrastructure for broadband connectivity, has applied to upgrade Knaresborough Telephone Exchange, which it operates for mobile network providers Vodafone and Telefonica UK.
The exchange is situated in a residential area on Park Row.
Planning documents submitted to North Yorkshire Council in support of the application say better 5G would provide an economic boost to the area. They say:
The two-storey exchange currently has a seven-metre rooftop stub mast and ancillary equipment, which is largely screened from general view.
The proposals seek to install new antenna support poles, which would increase the overall height of the stub mast by one metre, install antenna and ancillary radio equipment and upgrade the equipment cabinets.
The documents say:
North Yorkshire Council will decide whether to approve the plans.
