Police reveal latest crime figures for North Yorkshire
Reported crime fell by 6.1% in North Yorkshire last year, according to police figures released yesterday.
Robbery, theft from people and fraud each went down by 25% and public order offences reduced by 17%.
But shoplifting rose by 12%, possession of weapons went up by 10% and residential burglaries increased by 2%.
There was also a 13% increase in the category ‘miscellaneous crimes against society’, which includes sharing indecent images online.

Scott Bissett, North Yorkshire Police’s deputy chief constable, discussed the figures during an online public meeting held by Jo Coles, the Labour deputy mayor for policing, fire and crime.
DCC Bissett said the 6% reduction had occurred since April 2024 but added it was a “missed picture”.
He added:
Retail crime remains a stubborn problem, but it is nationally, so we have redoubled our efforts this year to tackle retail crime particularly in our towns and cities, and I think that’s had the effect of us instilling a little bit more confidence with retailers to report it.
Our outcome rate for retail crime is really positive and in some areas of the force we are detecting half of the retail crime reported to us, particularly on the coast.
We need to encourage reporting of that because these tend to be repeat offenders. If we don’t know about it there might be an opportunity for a criminal justice outcome that we need to get on behalf of the victim and retailers.
Ms Coles said “some of those numbers that are going in the wrong direction are quite concerning”.
She also suggested 'miscellaneous crimes against society' could be re-categorised to make it clearer but DCC Bissett said the force followed national guidelines.
He also said arrests were "significantly higher than previous years", particularly during summer.
