For 175 years, Ripley Show has been one of the summer highlights for people in the village and beyond.

Held on the second Sunday in August in the grounds of Ripley Castle, it attracts between 6,000 and 8,000 people

The traditional country show features everything you’d expect from sheep and heavy horses to home-grown cakes and terrier racing.

There are also a few surprises: this year’s event includes axe throwing and stunt rider Dangerous Steve.

But there was another rather unexpected surprise recently when Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby announced in June they were selling the Ripley Castle Estate after 700 years in the family. The estate is expected to go on the market in autumn.

Uncertainty surrounding its ownership has prompted the estate to cancel weddings beyond this year.

Honorary show secretary Tammy Smith said it was still in the dark about what will happen. She said:

I haven’t spoken to Sir Thomas yet so I don’t know what the plan is. When this year’s show is over we will focus on it.

He’s a big supporter of the show. He’s been coming for many years and presents the trophies for the grand parade of cattle and heavy horses and judges the fancy dress.

Terrier racing madness is a highlight again this year.

Tickets for this year’s show cost £12 for adults and £5.50 for children if booked before midnight tonight (August 10). The prices goes up to £16 and £7 on the day.
