A new ophthalmology clinic has opened in Harrogate.
Newmedica, on Grove Park Court, is part of the Specsavers Group and offers specialist services for private and NHS clients.
The Harrogate branch will provide pre-assessments for cataract and oculoplastic procedures, but surgeries will be carried out at Newmedica’s surgical centre in Leeds.
The clinic, which has cost £700,000 to develop, will also offer yttrium aluminium garnet laser treatment (YAG). YAG is a method of treating glaucoma and cloudiness after cataract surgery.
Newmedica said the Harrogate clinic, which opened on January 6, will help people who have been waiting up to a year or more to have cataract surgery, and reduce NHS waiting times.
Consultant ophthalmologist David Dunleavy, who co-owns Newmedica, said:
Our aim is to help more people in and around Harrogate access high-quality, affordable treatment, when they need it.
Our Leeds hospital has been operating since 2018 with an excellent reputation for the support it provides to patients and the outcomes they achieve. Being owned and led by the consultants that provide the care means patients are at the heart of every decision.
Newmedica said the clinic will offer young eye surgeons opportunities to train there, as part of an agreement between the NHS and independent healthcare providers.
Steven Kirk, operations director and partner at Newmedica Leeds and Harrogate, added:
We know there’s increasing demand for ophthalmic services in and around Harrogate and we’re delighted to help more patients have swifter access to quality care through the new local clinic.
Newmedica Harrogate is open Monday to Friday, 8am until 5pm.
