The collision occurred on a section of Knaresborough High Street.

A retrospective planning application has been submitted for a shopfront on Knaresborough High Street.

Tobba Market, which sells vapes, confectionery and other products, is based in the grade two listed building at number 59.

Unauthorised works to the frontage were reported to the freehold owner of the building last month, according to a design and access statement submitted to North Yorkshire Council in support of the retrospective application.

The document adds:

Unfortunately, the tenant had removed and disposed of the timber shopfront, including glass and door. In its place, a modern aluminium shop front had been inserted with illuminated signage board above. Thankfully, the historic, decorative timber shop front surround has been retained undamaged.

The building “contributes considerably to the streetscape and the character of the conservation area through its form, materials, detailing and setting”, the document says, adding.

The building is therefore of considerable scenic and panoramic value, along the High Street. The new shop front is not suitable for this historic streetscape and must be removed and replaced.

The tenant has installed a new illuminated sign onto the shop front. The timber shop front behind is still in place. It is therefore proposed that the new sign is carefully removed and a new timber painted backing panel installed. This will support new nonilluminated letters and imagery. This approach would be in character with the streetscape along the High Street.

The application is for a new painted timber shop frontage.

Kelly Young, from Knaresborough & District Chamber, said:

Although we need to keep the town looking authentic, I believe if shopfronts are tidy, secure and well fitted we can modernise the High Street.

The old wooden shopfronts look dilapidated and worn out. The council has set a precedent by giving permission for aluminium frames at Hair Asylum. They don't need sanding and painting and can be more durable, as well as make the street look nice.

The council will decide whether to approve the appplication.
