The A61 at South Stainley

Several car owners are bidding to recover the cost of damage to their vehicles after a lorry shed its load on the A61 between Harrogate and Ripon.

Bricks from the lorry littered several miles of the carriageway between Killinghall and Wormald Green on the morning of January 17.

The Stray Ferret reported the incident here.

One motorist that was behind the heavy goods vehicle told us it was “like Dodgems" as cars tried to avoid falling bricks. The lorry driver appeared oblivious to the danger.

The Stray Ferret asked North Yorkshire Police how many vehicles it was aware of were affected by the incident.

A spokesperson said today it was aware of four, adding:

Our understanding is the company who owns the vehicle that shed its load is working with the four drivers to reimburse them for the damage caused to their vehicles.

We also asked if police had identified the driver and, if so, whether it was taking any action.

The spokesperson replied:

The lorry driver has been identified and has been reported for having an insecure load. A report will be sent to the traffic commissioner to decide what further actions will be taken against the company and driver through their office.
