A new salon specialising in children’s haircuts is set to open in Harrogate later this month.
Cheeky Chops is a children’s barber shop that aims to make getting a haircut a relaxing experience for both parents and children.
The salon is set to open at 28 Mayfield Grove on October 27.
The business is owned by Jody Brayshaw who already owns two barber shops in Leeds.
She first opened Cheeky Chops in 2019 after seeing how uncomfortable children were while getting their hair cut in her regular barber shop.
She said:
I have also got a normal barbershop in Leeds, and I saw children coming in were scared and there was nowhere child-friendly. Parents felt uncomfortable if their child cried and would often apologise to other customers and the stylists.
I saw the market for a child-friendly atmosphere. With a salon for kids we know what we’re getting and that makes parents feel comfortable. To make the children comfortable we just talk to them, make them laugh, show them our equipment before we begin and make it a fun experience.
Ms Brayshaw has three children of her own. She began hairdressing aged 15 and has been a salon owner for seven years.
Cheeky Chops' main clientele is children aged 0-10 and the salon offers everything from a first haircut to a back-to-school trim.
The Harrogate salon will create four jobs: a manager, two stylists and a beautician to offer parents treatments while they wait.
Ms Brayshaw said:
It is a really good area and a nice place to have something like this – I think it’ll work really well. There is a market for this – there is nothing like it around but there lots of families in Harrogate.
I am looking forward to it and I think parents will feel happy it’s coming to the town because it really is needed.

The salon is currently undergoing a £5,000 refurbishment and will have themed rooms.
The main area will be jungle-themed with separate princess and gaming rooms as well as a space for under-5s who can sit in cars while they get their hair cut.
There will also be a space for parents to receive beauty treatments so that their children can wait in a safe space.
Ms Brayshaw added that she sees many children with special educational needs:
She said:
It is really needed for children with special needs. Sometimes you get kicked and punched but they need their hair cutting and parents are really anxious about it, but we get the job done and make sure the children are comfortable. We offer extra time and take extra care with them.
A haircut at Cheeky Chops will cost around £20 for 20 minutes and more information can be found here.
