A former England footballer has been fined for speeding in Harrogate.
Jermain Defoe, 41, was caught travelling at 52mph in a 30mph speed limit on the A61 Leeds Road, on April 9.
Defoe, who lives in Welwyn, was driving a 22-reg Range Rover.
He pleaded guilty to the offence by post and did not attend Harrogate Magistrates Court yesterday (July 16), where the case was carried out under the single justice procedure, which requires only a magistrate and legal advisor to be present.
He was fined £660 and ordered to pay a £266 victim surcharge, as well as £90 in prosecution costs. Six points were added to his licence.
Defoe scored 20 goals for England in 57 appearances.
His long 23-year career included stints in the Premier League for Tottenham and West Ham.
He returned to Tottenham in a coaching capacity but announced his resignation from the role this morning. In a social media post, he said:
Now is the right time for me to move on and shape the rest of my coaching and managerial careers, nevertheless I will forever remember my time at Spurs fondly.
