A major fire that engulfed a two-storey building in Pateley Bridge was not caused deliberately, the fire service has said.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to King Street just after 10pm on Saturday (September 14) following reports of a “large building fire”.

The blaze, which broke through the roof of the building, affected the King Street Workshop site and a residential property.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was launched on Sunday morning.

But the fire service today said the cause is believed to be "accidental" and the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Firefighters remained at the scene of the fire for several hours, using breathing apparatus, main jets, hose reel jets and an aerial ladder platform to tackle the blaze.

Mayor of Pateley Bridge, Chris Thompson, yesterday told the Stray Ferret at least two businesses at the site were “completely gutted” by the fire, and one resident – who was taken to hospital – has been “made homeless” as a result.

Mr Thompson praised the town’s “community spirit”, adding people “really pulled together” to help those affected.

Moxon and Simm Jewellers, which occupies unit one, and Fiona Mazza Ceramics, in unit two, are both closed until further notice due to the fire.
