Firefighters were called out to rescue cows trapped in a polytunnel yesterday (January 6).

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log said Harrogate and Ripon crews were called to Fewston at 2.23pm after six calves became trapped in a collapsed polytunnel.

The log adds firefighters used small tools and crew power to release the calves, which were left with the farmer.

The Stray Ferret asked how the polytunnel collapsed on the cattle, but the fire service did not release this information.

Basement blaze caused by water dripping on electricity supply

The log also said five fire crews were called to reports of a blaze at a commercial building in Harrogate.

Firefighters from Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Boroughbridge and West Yorkshire responded to the incident, which was on Wetherby Road, at 3.08pm.

The fire was in the basement of the property, and crews used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish it.

The area was then ventilated and inspected using a thermal imaging camera, the log added.

The Stray Ferret asked the fire service what caused the fire. A spokesperson said:

The fire is believed to be accidental, caused by water that had dripped on to the electricity supply.
