A consultation into a new North Yorkshire local plan opens today.
The North Yorkshire Local Plan will set out how much land should be provided – and where it should be – to accommodate new homes, jobs and associated infrastructure.
It will also include policies to protect the county’s natural and built environment.
It is being drawn up by North Yorkshire Council and will supersede plans created by now defunct authorities, such as Harrogate Borough Council which was abolished in April 2023.
Rachael Hutton, the council’s planning policy and place manager, said in a report to councillors that the main purpose of the consultation was to get early views from a wide cross section of the community and stakeholders on what the local plan should contain and the overall strategy for where new homes and jobs should be located.
She said:
The preparation of a new local plan for North Yorkshire is an important opportunity to set out the council’s place-making and sustainable growth ambitions and to seek to meet the needs of our communities.
The issues and options consultation is the first opportunity for the council to seek views on the direction of the new local plan and will be an important stage in shaping how the plan evolves.
The consultation will take place over eight weeks between May 19 and July 15, 2025.
The key consultation document the council is inviting comments on is the North Yorkshire Local Plan: our first conversation 2025, which considers key planning issues including sustainable growth, climate change, housing needs, economic development, sustainable transport, infrastructure and the historic environment.
