Ex-teacher who stabbed Harrogate woman banned from profession
A former teacher who stabbed a Harrogate woman on her doorstep has been banned indefinitely from the profession.
In June 2023, Clare Bailey, who was a secondary school teacher in Rowley Regis in the West Midlands, was jailed for attempted murder on Byland Road in Bilton in April 2022.
Bailey, 47, travelled to Harrogate from Dudley where she attacked the wife of her ex-partner on her doorstep while wearing a red wig, blue covid mask and sunglasses. She disguised a large knife behind a bouquet of flowers.
She was jailed at Leeds Crown Court for 22 years.
Now, the Teaching Regulation Agency has banned the former maths teacher indefinitely from the profession.
In a decision notice published this week, Sarah Buxcey, of the TRA, said the move was “proportionate and in the public interest”.
A professional conduct hearing took place in March, which Bailey attended but was not represented by a solicitor.
Ms Buxcey said in her decision that the former teacher enjoyed her job, but accepted that she would be in prison “for a significant length of time”.
She had been a teacher since 2001, but was dismissed in January 2023.
Bailey told the panel that her release date had been set for May 2037 with an additional seven years on licence, by which point she would be “in no position to take up teaching again”.
The panel banned the 47-year-old from teaching indefinitely. She will also be unable to apply to restart her teaching career.
Ms Buxcey added:
In view of the seriousness of the allegations found proved against her, I have decided that Ms Bailey shall not be entitled to apply for restoration of her eligibility to teach.
Bailey will be able to appeal the decision to the High Court within 28 days.
