A Harrogate coffee shop is to expand its offering in the new year.

Grane Coffee and Bakery took over the Station Parade unit formerly occupied by The Chocolate Works in January.

Owner Rod Hardman previously told the Stray Ferret Grane would be "arguably the coolest and most stylish” coffee shop in the town.

He has now decided to apply for a premises licence because, he says, customers repeatedly said how much they would like a glass of wine or champagne with their avocado and smoked salmon brunches and breakfasts.

The licence to serve alcohol was approved yesterday (December 11).

Since then Grane has started serving alcohol, including wine, prosecco and champagne. Beers, cocktails and spirits will also be introduced, Mr Hardman said.

He added:

We’re going to make it into a restaurant in the evenings. But we're going to remain as is over the Christmas period - just serving alcohol too.

I want to make sure we've got the same standard of product. Our day service is successful and I want our evening service to be just as successful. I want it to have its own niche.

Mr Hardman said the dinner menu is still being finalised but it is likely to consist of small plates.

When asked what will make Grane stand out against the rest of the town's hospitality scene, he told the Stray Ferret:

We try to do everything differently to everyone else. For example, we don't sell Coca Cola, we have an alternative.

You won't really see the brands we sell anywhere else in Harrogate.

He also said people can expect a "very personalised experience" at Grane, and that the team "look at things in a different way".

The new licence permits alcohol to be served at Grane between 7.30am and 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and until 5.30pm on a Sunday.

However, Mr Hardman said opening hours won't extend until the new year and Grane will continue to operate between 8am and 5pm until then.

Dinner service will also start in the new year.

As well as coffee and cakes, Grane also serves pies, sandwiches, salads and pastries. It also has a small shop which sells pasta, sauces and sweet treats.
