Richard Hamer, owner of Over & Above, and the new venue.

The latest addition to Harrogate’s hospitality scene will open this week.

Over & Above, which has taken on the former Ali Raj restaurant unit on Cheltenham Crescent, will be a speakeasy-style bar.

Owner Richard Hamer, who spent a decade working at Sipsmith Gin London, moved to Harrogate three years ago.

He previously told the Stray Ferret he felt there was a gap in the market for late-night table service in the town, and people can expect “something different” from his new venture.

Mr Hamer said at the time:

People might just see another bar after quite a few have opened recently, but because of my background and because I’m a big geek for sexy drinks, it will offer something different.

The name – Over & Above – is literally because we are above the Little Ale House structurally, and is synonymous with how we will go over and above for our guests.

The site has undergone an extensive refurbishment, and Mr Hamer previously told the Stray Ferret the space would be “unrecognisable”.

He added he had “meticulously thought through every element of the cocktails” on offer, including the ingredients, temperature, glassware and garnishes.

Mr Hamer said:

Some of our cocktails will take up to three days to make, so we will prep just like a chef would in a high-end restaurant.

Over & Above teased some of the innovative drinks people can look forward to on social media, including the ‘clarified colada’ (pictured above, on the right).

Along with photos of the drink, the post said:

This fun little banger is a twist on a piña colada with a nod to the Miami Vice. We combine a blend of delicious rums, pineapple and citrus before using a milk clarification process. We then finish the serve with a strawberry yoghurt sphere to add texture and another layer of flavour.

There will also be a range of beer and wines available at Over & Above, which will open its doors on Thursday (March 6).

The bar will open from 5pm until late on Thursdays, 5pm until 1am on Fridays, 3pm until 1am on Saturdays and 3pm until late on Sundays.
