Harrogate man John Shackleton has been awarded an MBE in the King's birthday honours list.

Mr Shackleton, 85, has filled ambulances with medical equipment and other items of aid and driven them to some of the most troubled parts of the world over the last 34 years.

Despite suffering a heart attack a few years ago, he chops logs which he then sells to fund his missions.

He was awarded the MBE for services to fundraising and the provision of humanitarian aid and medical equipment to eastern Europe after being nominated by his grandson.

The Stray Ferret has written frequently about Mr Shackleton, including when he was preparing for his 49th trip late last year. You can read the article here.

Speaking about his award, Mr Shackleton said:

I’m quite embarrassed really, it is just something I do on a daily basis.

It is an honour to receive, and it is quite bewildering. I have had people congratulating me in the street, I never thought I would get anything like this.

The Stray Ferret previously reported that four Harrogate women had been named in the list.

Elizabeth Bramall, of The Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation, was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her service to charity.

Lesley Margaret Wild, former chair of Bettys and Taylors, was also awarded a CBE for her contribution to business and trade.

Elizabeth Mary Whyte, the covid lead at HC-One – a UK-wide residential care provider, was awarded an MBE for her work in the social sector.

Josephine Carol Finnegan, an active fundraiser for end-of-life charity Marie Curie, will also become an MBE for her charitable fundraising and contributions to the Harrogate community.
