Reports of a ‘loud bang’ in Harrogate spread quickly across social media last night – but police appear not to have found out yet what caused it.
North Yorkshire Police said in a statement today it received reports of the bang at an address on Knaresborough Road at about 8.45pm.
People as far away as Bilton and Knaresborough claimed to have heard the noise.
Police and firefighters attended the scene but today's statement by the force said there was “no sign of a fire or explosion”.
A witness, who lives nearby, last night told the Stray Ferret her “ears were still ringing” and her “cat was still terrified” two hours after the noise.
No injuries were reported, police said, but enquiries are ongoing. The statement said:
Anyone with information about the incident who hasn't already spoken to the police is asked to call 101.
We're particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage in the area - this can be submitted to us online. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Stray Ferret has contacted North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for more information.
