Plans revealed to extend Marton cemetery
Plans have been submitted to extend the cemetery in Marton-cum-Grafton.
Marton-cum-Grafton Parochial Church Council, which oversees the governance of Christ Church, has applied to North Yorkshire Council to use another 0.08 hectares of land for burials.
A design and access statement written by Ilkley-based Overton Architects on behalf of the PCC says the extra land “will be able to serve the community for another 60 years at the current rate of two internments per annum”.
The proposal incorporates nature-friendly features, such as set aside areas and low mow areas, and retains hedgerows.
The statement says the current cemetery, which was last extended in 1901, is almost at capacity for burials.
It adds:
The proposed extension site currently comprises underutilised agricultural land and is in the process of being purchased for a nominal sum by the PCC for the purposes outlined within this planning application.
The current landowner who will retain ownership of the adjoining agricultural land is supportive of the proposal.
As part of the plans, a new pedestrian / pallbearer route will be created through the north-east corner of the existing cemetery and a raised walkway will be installed between the existing and proposed sites.
The cemetery, on Legram Lane, has just 11 burial plots remaining.
Another 124 plots would be created if North Yorkshire Council approves the scheme.
Marton-cum-Grafton is about three miles from Boroughbridge.
