Prolific Harrogate thief convicted for 63rd time
A Harrogate man received his 63rd conviction this week after stealing laundry products from Asda.
Matthew Yare, 44, of Claro Road, already had outstanding fines totalling over £1,600 for his previous crimes.
On July 21 this year, Yare stole two boxes of Surf laundry pods and a packet of Lenor scent boosters, worth £30.96, from the Asda on Bower Road.
The security guard was able to identify him from store security footage due to prior encounters.
Yare admitted the offence and also pleaded guilty to possession of Pregabalin, a medication used to treat epilepsy and anxiety, at Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (August 20).
As Yare had no prescription or medical reason to have the four tablets, he was charged with possession of a Class C drug.
Yare was last in court six weeks ago, also on charges of theft.
His defence said:
There is a certain chaoticness in his life, but he’s trying to engage in drug support services.
Yare was given a fine of £30.96 to compensate Asda.
The court heard he had 61 previous convictions, of which 31 are for theft, and owes £1,600 in fines.
The judge said he would write off £350 of the fine, to make it more realistic for Yare to pay off. As he’s on benefits, he has £70 removed from the payment each month.
The judge then said:
You have a significant record of offending. If you continue to offend you will end up in prison.
