As Knaresborough prepares for its biggest event of the year, organisers have announced a schedule of road closures for the town.
The Great Knaresborough Bed Race has been held annually since 1966 on the second Saturday in June and is organised by volunteers from the Knaresborough Lions.
Traffic measures will begin the night before the race, on the evening of Friday June 7. No waiting cones will be put out on parts of Waterside, Castle Ings and Cheapside.
Knaresborough Lions said:
Please make every effort to move cars as these roads are on the race route so beds will need access.
Road closures will begin at 10am on June 8, with roads into and out of the market place shutting for the set up of the event. Including the top part of Castle Ings/Brewerton Street, Cheapside and Silver Street.
From midday the High Street/A59 will close from the bus station to Bond End and extending up the hill to Harrogate Golf Club.
High Bond End will also close up to the junction with Lands Lane. Meaning that all roads in the centre of town will be shut.
At 2pm on the day of the race, Waterside (from High Bridge to bottom of Castle Ings) and the remainder of Castle Ings will close.
Knaresborough Lions said:
The aim is to lift road closures in stages, but please allow for the fact that roads could be closed until 6pm if it is deemed unsafe to open earlier due to crowds. For those wanting to park, Knaresborough Lions have organised a park and ride service from GSPK on Manse Lane, with the bus run by Connexions. This will start around 9.30-10am, finishing at 6pm. Unfortunately, we are unable to have the park and ride service at King James retail park this year.
King James School are organising parking on their grounds for a £5 charity donation. Fisher Street and Chapel Street car parks will remain open.
Conyngham Hall car park, Henshaws car park and the Castle car park will be closed for the entirety of race day.
An accessible viewing area will be available in the market place for those who require, outside the newsagents.
