Closure signs on a busy road in Ripon will be removed by Northern Powergrid to prevent further confusion for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
As previously reported by the Stray Ferret, the section of Bondgate from Iron Bridge to King Street was scheduled to close for five days, starting on Monday (September 8) and lasting until Friday (September 12).
Diversion signs were put in place at key junctions, directing road users along alternative routes including Boroughbridge Road and Skellgarths.
But the contractor, due to carry out essential maintenance work at the electricity substation near the River Skell, did not turn up.
The signs on Bondgate will be removed
Northern Powergrid, which supplies power to homes and businesses in Ripon and across Yorkshire and the north east, said the road closure was required to accommodate the size of vehicles needed to carry out the work.
A motorist, who didn’t wish to be named, told the Stray Ferret:
We have plenty of roadworks and diversions in Ripon at present and can do without signs that send us on needless timewasting journeys to avoid road closures that are not actually taking place.
No reason was given by Northern Powergrid for the no show of the maintenance workers and their vehicles, but the company issued the following statement yesterday afternoon (September 10)
The essential maintenance and planned road closure at Bondgate, Ripon, will be rescheduled.
Traffic management will be removed, and the road will re-open.
We will continue to work in partnership with our contactor to re-schedule the works, installing appropriate traffic management as authorised by North Yorkshire Council.
We thank customers and road users for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience.
