How the store was originally planned to look.

A site plan for the new Tesco supermarket being built on the outskirts of Harrogate has been published.

Tesco received planning permission in February 2023 to build a store, petrol station and a 209-space car park at the former gas works site at the junction of Skipton Road and Ripon Road.

Ground clearance work, including tree felling, began last summer but was temporarily halted when contractor ISG entered administration in September. Site work resumed when KPS Limited was appointed to carry out the work.

Tesco also revised its plans in October to create a greener store, with features such as solar panels on the roof, timber frames and cladding and a community garden.

The supermarket is due to open this year.

The site plan by S+SA Architects on behalf of Tesco.

A raft of new documents uploaded on to the council’s planning portal over the last month includes an amended site plan drawn up by architects S+SA Architects on behalf of Tesco.

It shows a vehicular access from a roundabout on Skipton Road. This road will lead to the car park, and beyond this will be the supermarket.

The plan says the existing road bridge on Skipton Road will be retained but the pedestrian bridge will be removed and replaced with a new 2.5-metre wide footbridge.

A cinder track will run from the new roundabout to the back of the car park.

The community garden will be created between the store and Oak Beck.

Trees are being planted around the site, which is bordered by Oak Beck to the north but another recently added planning document says Yorkshire Water has restrictions in place which prevent the planting of deep-rooted trees within the area.
