Tesco has restarted construction work on its new Harrogate supermarket.

The company received planning permission in February last year to build a store, petrol station and a 209-space car park at the former gas works at the junction of Skipton Road and Ripon Road.

Ground clearance work, including tree felling, took place during the summer.

But progress ground to a halt when construction contractor ISG entered administration in September and the project had to go back out to tender.

Tesco has now appointed KPS Limited to carry out the work and activity at the site has recommenced.

A Tesco spokesperson said today:

We’re pleased to say that a contractor is now in place and work has started on our new Harrogate superstore.

The initial 12 weeks of work will include setting up and preparation of the site, installation of acoustic fencing and pouring foundations. We will keep the local community updated on our progress during the build and hope to have the store open by the end of 2025.

Tesco submitted revised plans for a greener store in October. They include solar panels to provide renewable energy for the store, a timber frame to reduce the carbon footprint and a rainwater harvesting tank.

The building will be clad in reclaimed Yorkshire stone and Horticap will create a community garden alongside it.
