The precocious talent of a six-year-old schoolgirl, can be seen in a new exhibition of leathercraft at Ripon Library.

Evelyn Clarkson, who is a pupil at Bishop Monkton C of E Primary School, has had her work highly commended, after taking part in the Heritage Crafts Association Young Leatherworker of the Year competition.

She was the youngest entrant in the competition, where the other contestants were in their 20s and has also become the youngest person ever to have an exhibition at the library.

The items that Evelyn has produced, including footwear, a bag and wristbands - all made from leather - have been put on display at and will remain in place for a week.

Leathercraft specialist Andy Bates,  who runs the Squigglers Craft and Art Club for children at Ripon Workhouse Museum, told the Stray Ferret:

Evelyn has a remarkable talent. She's only been making things with leather for a few weeks but is already working at a level that most adults would find difficult.

In addition to the certificate that she received from the Heritage Crafts Association, her skills have been recognised by the Walsall Leather Skills Centre, where professional saddlers are taught.

I think with this sort of commitment and skill, Evelyn will be extremely successful at whatever she chooses to do in the future.

Alexa Vernon, director of Ripon Museums, who attended  yesterday evening's opening of the exhibition with members of Evelyn's family and school friends, said:

Cultural and creative opportunities are available at our museums as part of the Arts Council-funded activities that we provide and it is wonderful to see Evelyn and other children learning and mastering a heritage craft, with expert guidance from Andy.

Evelyn's Mum, added:

She has thoroughly enjoyed going with my father to the weekly sessions at the Workhouse Museum and the ceritificate that she has received will have pride of place in our home.

Squigglers Craft and Art Club is held from 4pm to 5:30 pm every Monday during term time. For further details, contact andy.bates@riponmuseums.co.uk
