A community event which promotes unity within communities will take place this summer in Harrogate in memory of the late Labour MP, Jo Cox.

The ‘Great Get Together', organised by the Jo Cox Foundation, will last from June 20-22. This is the weekend closest to the late politician’s birthday.

The event is designed to bring people together from all different backgrounds and encourage mutual understanding and respect within our communities.

The Jo Cox foundation was established in 2016 following the murder of the Batley and Spen MP. The Labour politician was known for her humanitarian views and campaigning on social issues.

The foundation aims to promote the issues that Ms Cox was passionate about – “that we have more in common than that which divides us”.

As part of the charity initiative, a ‘More in Common’ network was established to promote these values and try to “bridge divides in communities”.

The More in Common network has a collection of groups across the country, with a Harrogate group launching on April 12.

The group has said that one of its key objectives in 2025 is to organise a ‘Great Get Together’ as part of the foundation’s UK-wide annual celebration of socially connected and resilient communities.

The foundation has said that they want to use this event as a means of building a stronger community, “where everyone has a sense of identity and belonging”.

Since starting in 2017, the Great Get Together Events have attracted millions of people to take part in picnics, iftars, street parties and community events.

The event is open to everyone. To get involved with Harrogate’s More in Common group or the Great Get Together in June, please contact moreincommonharrogate@gmail.com.
