North Yorkshire Council has given an update on the future of the Knaresborough land train.

Councillors approved spending £15,000 on a feasibility study for the land train - which would ferry passengers between Waterside and the town centre – in September.

A trial date was scheduled for October half-term and, if successful, the council hoped the train would become a regular service helping people negotiate the town's hilly terrain.

However, Knaresborough and District Chamber last month announced the trial had been postponed and could instead take place over Easter half-term next year.

The reason for the delay is unclear, but the council's brief update suggests the land train will still materialise.

A report due before next week’s meeting of the council's Harrogate and Knaresborough Area Committee said:

North Yorkshire highways officers are working closely with the consultant appointed by the Knaresborough and District Chamber to resolve the remaining issues before the trial service of the land train can proceed.

The outstanding matters include hours of operation, access to Waterside, and mitigating risks related to low temperatures affecting road conditions.

The report adds it is likely the trial will be "delayed until after the next year" and a new date will be agreed with local stakeholders in Knaresborough.

The area committee will meet to discuss the issue on November 28.
