Harrogate Town’s match against Wrexham at the end of the month is already the Wetherby Road side’s fastest-selling game – thanks to what a club spokesman called the “Hollywood factor”.
Wrexham AFC is owned by A-list movie star Ryan Reynolds and his business partner and friend, fellow actor Rob McElhenney.
The pair bought Wrexham in 2020, and their investment in the club helped it to win promotion from the National League to League Two at the end of last season.
Their involvement with the club has been charted by Welcome to Wrexham, a Disney+ documentary series that will enter its third season next year.
Tickets for the Harrogate-Wrexham game went on sale a month ago – on October 16 – to home supporters who have been to at least one home match this season. Most of them have already been sold, leaving just a few still up for grabs.
Hal Boxhall-Dockree, media manager at Harrogate Town, told the Stray Ferret:
“It’s the Hollywood factor. People are just more excited about this one – not necessarily our regular fans, but we’ve certainly had more interest from a lot of people who come less often.
“Some of them will have watched Welcome to Wrexham, which has generated a lot of media hype.”
All 450 tickets allocated to travelling Wrexham fans have already been sold. According to Colin Henrys, Wrexham’s head of media and communications, this is not unusual following the club’s acquisition by Reynolds and McElhenney. He said:
“This is very much the ‘new normal’. We’ve sold out all of our away league games this season, and you can see from looking through the attendances this season that every team we’ve visited has posted either their highest – or at the very least one of their highest – crowds of the season. This is a continuation of the trend we noticed last season too.”
But asked if Wrexham’s star owners were expected at the EnviroVent Stadium on November 28, Harrogate Town’s spokesman said:
“I would think it’s very unlikely. I’m not aware of Ryan Reynolds having been to any other away games – but you never know.”
Whether he makes an appearance or not, the match is unlikely to be a dull affair. Despite a 15-year absence from league football, Wrexham haven’t lost a match in their last 10 league outings and currently stand second in League Two, just behind Stockport County. By contrast, Harrogate are in 14th place, having won half of their last 10 league games.
Tickets for the League Two clash are scheduled to go on general sale after the weekend, but Hal said:
“We’ll wait till Monday and then see how sales are going. At this rate, we may not need to release tickets for general sale at all.
“We are down to our last few tickets, so I would recommend people get them now to avoid disappointment.”
Harrogate Town have two matches to play before they meet Wrexham: a home tie against Swindon Town this Saturday (November 18), and an away fixture against Crawley Town on Saturday, November 25.
Tickets for all matches are available online only at the club’s e-ticketing webpage.

Four generations set to support Harrogate Town at Carabao Cup clash
Four generations of Harrogate Town fans from the same family are set to attend the Envirovent Stadium tomorrow night.
Town take on Carlisle United at Wetherby Road in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
In attendance will be the Deighton family, who have collectively followed Harrogate for around 40 years.
But Tuesday night’s match will be special for the Deighton’s as seven-year-old Isaac attends his first Town game.
He will be joined by his dad Tom, 27, grandad Andy, 52 and great-grandad Peter, 76. They will all sit in the Wetherby Road stand.
Phil Deighton, a season ticket holder at Town who will also be at the game, said it was important to the family to support their local team.
Mr Deighton, who is Andy’s brother, said:
“The game on Tuesday will be Issac’s first game and he is really excited.
“As a family we have been watching Harrogate Town for nearly 40 years and it’s great that Isaac will be following in the family traditions.
“Supporting our local team is very important to us.”

Town will be hoping to make it through to the second round of the Carabao Cup against League One Carlisle.
The club go into tomorrow night’s game off the back of a 1-0 in a Yorkshire Derby against Doncaster last Saturday.
Town took four points from Carlisle last season with a 3-3 draw at the Envirovent Stadium and a 1-0 win away at Brunton Park.
Carlisle were promoted at the end of last season after defeating Stockport County on penalties in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.
New terrace and kiosk at Harrogate Town approvedPlans for a new terrace and merchandise kiosk at Harrogate Town’s EnviroVent Stadium have been approved.
The club submitted the proposal for a 100-person terrace near to the north stand turnstiles, to Harrogate Borough Council before the authority was abolished.
It will also see a kiosk installed to serve fans refreshments and Harrogate Town merchandise.
North Yorkshire Council has now approved the proposals.
The club said the new terrace was required because the English Football League will no longer accept perimeter standing at stadiums.
In planning documents, it said:
“The proposed terrace will accommodate spectators which use the existing perimeter standing areas and will therefore not increase the overall ground capacity.
“The small kiosk building will be used for the club shop selling on site merchandising on match days, as well as a replacement (non-alcoholic) drinks servery to replace a kiosk within the AON Terrace that was recently converted to WCs.”

A total of 603 seats have been installed in the Black Sheep Brewery stand.
The changes will not increase the overall capacity of 5,071 but will see the number of fans that can be seated rise from 1,193 to 2,060.
A strong end to the season has seen Simon Weaver’s team secure their status in Division Two of the EFL. They are currently 19th with one match remaining.

Harrogate Town set for first game in three weeks in Boxing Day clashHarrogate Town are set to clash with Grimsby Town today in their first fixture in three weeks.
The Boxing Day match comes as Town have had two EFL League Two games postponed due to a frozen pitch.
Harrogate will welcome the Mariners to the EnviroVent Stadium in the hope of building on their 4-1 away win at Rochdale on December 3.
The fixture will be the first of three over the Christmas period.
Ahead of today’s game, Town will be without Will Smith, Dior Angus, Stephen Dooley, Matty Daly and Lewis Richards who are out injured.

However, Joe Mattock is set to be available after missing the victory at Rochdale.
Town will be hoping for a repeat of last season when they took six points from the Mariners in the league.
Manager Simon Weaver said it was important that the players kept their focus over the next three games.
He said:
New Harrogate Town clubhouse plan approved“We have got to make sure we have got that focus and don’t it slip.
“Three back to back wins would be huge for us in our season. It would make the table look completely different from where we were three games ago.
“It’s a tough prospect is this game. I have been watching a lot of the coverage of Grimsby. They had a great FA Cup victory against Plymouth, they went to Wimbledon and were probably the better team on the day and they beat Tranmere last time out.
“We know Paul Hurst, he was the last manager I played under. I know the quality he looks for in players and he is a very good manager.”
Harrogate Town has had plans for a new clubhouse at its Wetherby Road stadium approved.
The club tabled a planning application to build the two-storey facility in the north-west corner of the ground back in March this year.
It would be used to serve fans refreshments on match days and include an upper floor area for supporters to gather.
Harrogate Borough Council has now given the go-ahead for the plan.
The facility would be needed for the club to meet its English Football League membership criteria, which requires all member clubs to provide refreshment facilities for home and away fans in separate areas of the ground.
A planning report by Harrogate Borough Council said:
“This application seeks to construct a two storey building as a spectator facility.
“This is to ensure the club has sufficient facilities for home fans, further contributing to meeting its EFL membership requirements.”
The club has already seen a number of developments approved by the council since promotion, including a new ticket office and turnstiles at the EnviroVent Stadium which were backed by the council in April 2021.
