A flood alert has been issued for the Lower River Ure in the Harrogate district.

In an update at 7.14am this morning, the Environment Agency said “flooding is possible” in low-lying land, including agricultural land, and local roads in the areas around Masham, Boroughbridge, Aldborough and Bishop Monkton.

The alert said:

“Avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one.”

There are currently 25 flood warnings, where flooding is expected, and 64 flood alerts, where flooding is possible, active in England.

Another band of rain is expected across the district at about 7pm this evening but should clear up overnight and give way to a dry day tomorrow.

One hundred new electric vehicle charging bays are due to be installed in the Harrogate district this year, bringing the total to 120.

The bays are expected to be available early this year but the dates for each locality have not yet been published.

Half of the district’s 120 bays will be in Harrogate, which will have 60. They include a dozen each at the Victoria multi-storey car park, the Odeon cinema and Hornbeam Park.

There will be 27 in Knaresborough, 19 in Ripon, six in Boroughbridge and four each in Pateley Bridge and Masham.

A Harrogate Borough Council spokesperson said the bays would help achieve a net zero-carbon economy by 2038, adding:

“These new charging points support the uptake in electric vehicles for both our residents and our visitor economy, and complement other sustainable travel options.”

The decision to block off existing car park spaces for the new bays before they were in use caused controversy in Knaresborough last month when one business said it was damaging trade.

Hairdressers Kelly Teggin said she supported the introduction of electric charging bays but couldn’t understand why it had been done in the run-up to Christmas when the new bays weren’t even in use yet.

A resident was taken to hospital last night after a house fire between Masham and Ripon.

Fire spread from the fireplace at the home in Mowbray Terace, West Tanfield, prompting firefighters from Ripon and Bedale to rush to the scene at 6.09pm.

It was the fourth incident attended by Ripon fiefighters yesterday. They also dealt with a garage fire, chimney fire and water leak.

North Yorkshire Fore and Rescue Service’s incident log said:

“The fire had spread from the fireplace and was extinguished using one hose reel jet, small tools and a positive pressure fan to ventilate.

“The occupant of the property was also taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.”

Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, the Countess of Swinton, is to stand for the Liberal Democrats in the forthcoming by-election for Masham and Fountains on North Yorkshire County Council.

The by-election will be held following last month’s death of the Conservative Margaret Atkinson, who had held the seat since 2013. Ms Atkinson was also chair of the county council and a councillor on Harrogate Borough Council.

The division is expected to be keenly contested. The Conservatives currently hold 47 of the 90 seats on the county council, giving them a slender majority of four. If they were to lose their majority would be reduced to two, meaning the loss of one more seat would see them relinquish overall control of the council.

Margaret Atkinson

When the Masham and Fountains seat was contested in May’s local elections, Ms Atkinson was elected with 1,076 votes. Ms Cunliffe-Lister, who stood as an Independent, was second with 738 votes. relegating the Liberal Democrat Judith Hooper to third with 620 votes.

Ms Cunliffe-Lister told the Stray Ferret she had decided to stand at late notice last time, adding:

“I’ve had more time to consider it properly this time. My views align with the Liberal Democrats and they are the official opposition on the county council.”

She cited the cost of living crisis, the NHS, care homes and rural connectivity as key issues in the division.

The county council published a notice of vacancy for the division today. It said:

“A by-election to fill the vacancy will be held within 35 working days of a request for an election signed by two electors for the North Yorkshire County Council area being received.”
