The Pitcher and Piano in Harrogate has been taken over by the company that used to run the town’s Viper Rooms nightclub.

The bar, on the hospitality-rich John Street, will be known as The Harlow from Monday.

Paul Kinsey, who owns Harewood Group, announced the news today.

Mr Kinsey said in a statement:

“We are pleased to announce that from Monday, November 27 we have taken over the former Pitcher and Piano on John Street in Harrogate. In the short term it will be renamed The Harlow.

“We aim to immediately introduce live music and DJ Christmas party nights and create a great night out to complement our existing high quality food and drink service.”

John Street is a popular night spot.

He said the company was recruiting staff and management to add to the team it had inherited.

Mr Kinsey added:

“Then In the new year an exciting new concept will be introduced which we think our customers will love as much as we do.

“This is the start of our relationship with major pub companies taking over some of their sites and introducing the high quality management and entertainment that are our trademarks.”

Harewood Group owned the Viper Rooms, which closed in December last year.

Mr Kinsey lives near Harrogate and has continued to keep his eye on the market for opportunities.

The Stray Ferret reported in September that  the search was on to find a ‘self employed pub partner’ to take on the Pitcher & Piano.

Regular live music is returning to Montey’s in Harrogate for the first time since the pandemic began.

For more than twenty-five years the bar, which has a capacity of up to 200 revellers, has had a long-standing reputation for showcasing many local bands.

The bar began by reintroducing live music on Bank Holiday Sundays and has now decided to regularly put on bands after it was sure there was enough customer demand.

Colin Speirs, general manager of Montey’s, told the Stray Ferret:

“Obviously lockdown was tough for all businesses, but for small independent venues like Montey’s it was particularly challenging.

After several false starts and partial re-openings throughout the pandemic we faced multiple challenges.

Some of our most regular bands had taken the decision to stop performing, some guests still felt uneasy about crowds, and we had to be careful about our spending after such long closures.”

Local bands will be performing on Friday evenings.  The live music calendar will launch with Barr Lane on Friday 18 August.

Mr Speirs added:

“Three of the first five bands lined up for the Friday Sessions are brand new to us, which is very exciting and shows our commitment to showcasing the very best bands we can find.

“It feels great to be back in the game, we have always had a passion for live music since our very first night way back in 1996”.

A new cocktail bar is to open in Harrogate in 12 days.

Cosy Club will be situated in the heart of the town on Cambridge Street.

Loungers, which owns the venture, operates 193 sites in England and Wales, including Leeds and York.

The company issued a press release today confirming it will open on what is predominantly a retail street on August 31. Forty jobs will be created.

It said in a statement:

“The popular Victorian spa town of Harrogate has been a target of ours for some time.

“Our new restaurant offers a very strong location, linking the main retail and leisure pitches within the town. The externals of this historic building have been extensively renovated by our landlord, Broadland Properties.”

The release said the building had “an arts and crafts feel with wallpaper originally designed in 1895, table lamps throughout the restaurant which were made by hand and the main bar featuring lots of bespoke handmade stained-glass work”.

Work is taking place on Cambridge Street to complete the refurbishment.

It added the “opulent all-day bar and restaurant brand” would “bring a touch of glamour and our fresh, modern menu to the food scene”.

The menus will include “fresh and modern classics, extensive brunch, gluten free and vegan menus”

Cosy Club’s licensing application proposed opening hours of 8am to 1am Monday to Wednesday and Sunday and 8am until 2am from Thursday to Saturday.

The Stray Ferret has asked Loungers if it still plans to operate between these hours. It replied to say it will open from 9am each day and would confirm the closing times shortly.

Loungers was founded by a trio of friends from Bristol: Dave Reid, Alex Reilley and Jake Bishop.

They opened their first first venue in Bristol in 2002 and then opened the first Cosy Club in Taunton eight years later. They set up the separate Cosy Club brand to cater for larger sites.

Three new restaurants and bars are set to open in Harrogate town centre within the next few days.

Roland’s Bar, Samsons brasserie and The Giggling Squid restaurant are all set to add to Harrogate’s already-extensive hospitality scene.

Some locals may recognise Roland’s from its current venue in Leeds. The cocktail bar is owned by the same people, who also run the Domino Club in Leeds.

Based in the former Moss Bross shop on Parliament Street, it promises a “cool and relaxed” vibe.

Roland’s is open for bookings from tomorrow and is based on the top corner of the ginnel next door to All Bar One.

Samsons is a brasserie-style restaurant opening in the former Bistrot Pierre, above Sukhothai on Cheltenham Parade.

The kitchen team is headed up by executive chef Josh Whitehead, who is known for his work with the Harewood Food and Drink Project. He was also a semi-finalist on the TV programme MasterChef: The Professionals 2016.

The site — named after local philanthropist Samson Fox — will open on Monday.

Giggling Squid will welcome its first customers in the unit next to Banyan on John Street on Monday.

This will be the Thai restaurant chain‘s first venture in Yorkshire.

The tapas restaurant will offer the opportunity to eat indoors, outdoors or at home through click and collect and delivery services.

Look out for sneak peeks of new venues in the coming days. 

The owners of Leeds-based cocktail bar Roland’s look set to open a late night venue on Parliament Street in Harrogate.

An application has been submitted to Harrogate Borough Council for a licence to sell alcohol at the new bar, which it says will be open from Monday to Sunday from 10am until 2.30am.

The unit, at 23 Parliament Street, was most recently home to menswear store Moss Bros and is currently empty.

Roland’s website says it serves up “exceptional drinks, great music and a good time”. The Leeds bar opened in 2014 and is situated on 39 Call Lane, one of the most popular streets in the city for nightlife.

The new bar would be the latest addition to Parliament Street’s nightlife scene, which includes the Harrogate Arms, Revolución de Cuba, Mojo, Wetherspoons and the Viper Rooms.

The Ginnel hosts bars Montey’s and Major Tom’s Social.

Some venues on Parliament Street have struggled to survive in recent years including Jamie’s Italian, Wagyu Bar and Grill and The Restaurant Bar and Grill, which all closed.
