Changes at top of Harrogate law firm after FA appointment

Harrogate law firm McCormicks has named a new managing partner after its founder took on the role of chairman at the Football Association.

Stephen Hopwood, a specialist in family law, has succeeded Peter McCormick, who will remain as a senior partner.

The FA named Peter McCormick as its interim chairman after Greg Clarke, who described black players as “coloured”, stepped down from the role.

McCormicks, which is based on East Parade, describes itself as a ‘fearless law firm with a fearless reputation’.

Peter McCormick

Mr McCormick said:

“As a result of both the covid lockdown and of my increased commitments since I was appointed interim chairman of the FA in November, Stephen has taken a lot of responsibility for the day-to-day management of the business so this is a logical transition of duties for the future.

“I remain senior partner and will continue to play a very active role in the business of the firm, alongside my commitments to the Premier League and the FA.”

Mr Hopwood, who joined the practice in 2013, said:

“I am delighted to be expanding my role with the practice and look forward to working even more closely with the great team we have here to ensure we continue to offer the best possible service to our clients.”

The Old Deanery in Ripon goes back on the market

The Old Deanery in Ripon has ceased trading earlier than planned after 17 years and gone back on the market.

The hotel, bar and wedding venue was closed because of the lockdown but was not formally due to cease trading until the end of June.

However, the following statement, attributed to ‘the management team’, appeared on its website last week:

“It is with great sadness that we announce The Old Deanery has ceased trading from March 8 due to the negative impacts of coronavirus.

“From Linda, Chris and all the team; we’d like to thank you all for your custom over the years – it’s been our pleasure to welcome you to The Old Deanery.”

Ripon Cathedral owns the iconic building, which is situated opposite.

Property consultants Sanderson Weatherall has listed the 17th Century Grade II listed building on its website, with the price available on application.

It describes the building as an ’11 bedroom boutique hotel and function venue’.

News of The Old Deanery’s permanent closure on its Facebook page led to expressions of sadness and treasured memories. They included:

“So very sad to see such a special place not make it through this rotten time.”

“Very, very sad news, our little escape from life for a few nights once or twice a year. Had the loveliest staff, always friendly and helpful.”

“Always enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service – smart but not stuffy.”

Land owner has ‘ambitious plans’ to reinstate Knaresborough fountain

Knaresborough could still see its Victoria jubilee fountain reinstated in a major boost for the town’s long-running campaign.

The owner of the land where the fountain currently lays has revealed that he is still in talks with Knaresborough Town Council.

Knaresborough Civic Society said last month that it was returning the money it raised to reinstate the fountain on Gracious street after talks with the land owner broke down.

It seemed like the fountain would be lost. But the land owner, who would like to remain anonymous, told the Stray Ferret:

“I have ambitious plans for Victoria jubilee fountain which I have been working on for a while. Hopefully, I will be able to unveil what I have planned later this year.”

Cllr Andrew Willoughby, who chairs the jubilee fountain working group, also told the Stray Ferret:

“We are still negotiating with the land owner who certainly has some grand ideas for the fountain.”

“The campaign is certainly not over yet. The door is still swinging but it’s not open or locked.”

History of the fountain

Residents of Knaresborough bought the fountain in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee.

It was originally built on the High Bridge near the entrance to Mother Shipton’s cave and provided spa water from Bilton.

The fountain was later decommissioned and planted with flowers then in the latter half of the 20th century it was removed and deposited on private land.

Boroughbridge shop ‘hidden gem’ for owner’s wine knowledge

Look at the colour, give the wine a twirl and take a full whiff. Then it is time to taste. Make sure to get a mouthful and take in all the different flavours. You do not need to be a connoisseur to enjoy wine but it helps to have one by your side.

Nick Chadwick is the owner of Winearray, a hidden gem of a shop tucked away in Boroughbridge which has become a weekend pilgrimage for many in the Harrogate district since it opened its doors 16 years ago.

Winearray stocks more than 400 wines from the likes of France, Italy, Portugal and a little closer to home in England. The shop describes itself as a cornucopia and while the shop certainly has plenty of choice, Nick’s mind is the real horn of plenty.

Mr Chadwick loves nothing more than to visit the people and places where the wines are created to learn more of its story and, importantly, the taste.

While a weekend away of wine tasting in northern Italy sounds like an ideal holiday for just about anybody, Nick who is ever the professional finds that wines tend to stick in his mind all the more when he is enjoying them at the source.

Coronavirus has meant that Nick has had to change the way he runs his shop. He does miss the trips but more than anything he misses the wine tasting classes that he holds in Boroughbridge with some of the suppliers and customers.

Over the last year, Nick has reduced his shop opening hours so that he can spend half the day working on deliveries which have become increasingly popular. He has also adapted to hold wine tasting classes online.

When asked about how he competes with online shops and supermarkets, Nick Chadwick, who also stocks some select spirits and Cuban cigars, told the Stray Ferret:

“I think that people do come here for my guidance. If people do come in they come here to talk and to engage with me, it’s not just about looking around the shop.

“There are the regular customers, maybe regular is not a nice word in a wine shop, but there’s quite a lot of conversation either about wines or things connected to wine.

“Winearray has got a good customer base, most of whom are very loyal. A lot of people come to Boroughbridge for a more social shopping experience.

“I take a lot of pride in the wines that I stock, these bottles are all on my shelves for a reason.

“The shop has a set amount of space. It is quite difficult to always have new products, it needs to be interesting and good enough to knock another off.”

This is part of the Stray Ferret’s ‘hidden gem’ series. We are trying to highlight small independent businesses. They need to be tucked away but growing in popularity with an eye-catching and unique product or approach. Send us an email with your nominations.

Harrogate hospital reports four coronavirus deaths

Four more patients who tested positive for coronavirus have died at Harrogate District Hospital.

Three of the patients died on Tuesday and the fourth on Wednesday. It takes the hospital’s total number of covid deaths up to 175 since the start of the pandemic, according to NHS data.

The hospital revealed yesterday that it is now caring for 17 coronavirus patients, down from 42 patients the week before.

Since the start of the pandemic it has admitted 800 coronavirus positive patients and discharged 575.

Government data also released today shows how the Harrogate district has added just nine more coronavirus cases today, taking that total to 7,428 so far.

Cases have been low in recent weeks which means that the seven-day rate has also come down.

The Harrogate district now has a seven-day case rate of 45 per 100,000 population which slightly above the North Yorkshire average of 42.

However, the Harrogate district is below the England average which currently sits at 58 per 100,000.

Baltzersen’s to trial reusable cups again after covid

Baltzersen’s is waging war once again on single use cups after a brief ceasefire brought on by coronavirus.

Concern over spread of the virus forced all coffee shops to stop accepting reusable cups as a route to safely open up businesses.

Big chains like Starbucks and Costa have accepted them since summer but take up has been patchy across independents.

The move back to reusables is being trialled in the Knaresborough cafe as it starts to serve coffee for the first time.

Paul Rawlinson, owner of Baltzersen’s, believes that the environmental impact of coronavirus has gone under the radar.

He told the Stray Ferret:

“We stopped using disposable cups in 2018 but we had to bring them back in order to reopen the business. It’s not something we wanted to do.

“I know some are worried about staff handling the cups but basic hygiene like washing hands will make it perfectly safe.

“The time is right to bring back the reuseable cups. We just want people to have that option again.”

If the trial in Knaresborough goes well, Baltzersen’s will look at rolling it out in its Harrogate cafe and bakery.

Coronavirus vaccine reaches more than 64,000 in Harrogate district

The Harrogate district has handed out a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine to 64,416 people so far.

NHS figures released today, which covers the period up until March 7, show how 20,000 of those jabs are in the arms of the under 60s.

It also comes as Harrogate District Hospital is now down to 17 coronavirus patients, down from 42 patients last Thursday.

Since the start of the pandemic the hospital has admitted 800 coronavirus positive patients and discharged 575.

Two more people have also died after testing positive for coronavirus at Harrogate District Hospital. One of the patients died yesterday and the other died on Tuesday.

The number of coronavirus cases has remained low in the Harrogate district over the past couple of weeks. Today the district added a further 13 cases to bring the total up to 7,419 cases.

This week the NHS also confirmed that the Nightingale hospital will close and the building will return as a convention centre.

Harrogate man died from drugs, not head injury, inquest told

A coroner has ruled that a Harrogate man died as a result of drugs rather than a head injury, as police first believed.

Aaron Atkinson, 38, who was homeless at the time of his death, was found at a flat at Park House Green on May 7 last year.

North Yorkshire Police arrested two men, aged 46 and 40 at the time, on suspicion of murder and robbery shortly after the incident.

However, the force has now dropped its suspicions of murder.

It told the Stray Ferret today that one of the two suspects remains under investigation for assault and robbery. The other is still under investigation for robbery and theft.

Read more:

Jonathan Leach, assistant coroner for North Yorkshire and York, said at an inquest in Northallerton today:

“It is clear from the reports I have seen that Aaron Atkinson had a history of alcohol and drug abuse.

“Mr Atkinson was found unresponsive at a flat on Park House Green at 3am. The post-mortem found that he had taken heroin, cocaine, alcohol and anti-depressants.

“I have found the cause of death to be drugs-related.”

A mother’s tribute

Christine Bloomfield, Mr Atkinson’s mother, was at the inquest and told the Stray Ferret about her son’s life:

“People should remember Aaron for his heart of gold and his smile. He was a loving brother and son.

“He just got on the wrong path and went through a lot of heartache. Aaron recently lost his nan, dad and wife.

“My son was getting back on track. I saw him before he died in March and he had cleaned himself up.

“When we go through a life with a lot of sadness we all go in search for something to comfort us. With him it was drugs and alcohol.

“But he started to realise that he needed to make some changes. I believed him, he was doing well and I was proud of him. Then this happened.”
