Two Harrogate women have set up a walking group called Your Pace or Mine for single people aged over 40.

Jane Illman and Caz Walker created the group as an alternative to online dating that enables people to combine fresh air in beautiful countryside with the chance to mingle.

A Facebook group for the venture already has nearly 200 members and many are expected to take part in the inaugural walk this weekend, a six-miler from Harrogate to Ripley along Nidderdale Greenway.

Jane, who works in holistic therapies, specialising in mental health and well-being, said she understood the negative impact online dating can have on wellbeing.

She said:

“Life changed after covid, the majority of us can work from home, we shop online and we can even exercise online. If you’re single that can become a lonely way of life.

“We are thrilled to launch Your Pace or Mine and provide a unique platform for single individuals in North Yorkshire to connect through the shared love of walking.”

Jane added the group aimed to create “a warm and welcoming environment where members can form genuine connections, enjoy the beauty of our surroundings, and create lasting memories”.

Keen walker Caz is organising the routes, which will include the nearby Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

The walking group, which will initially meet monthly, aims to cater for all fitness levels and create a supportive and inclusive community in North Yorkshire.
