North Yorkshire Police has cancelled an appeal it issued yesterday after animal remains were found in Ripon.
The force yesterday (December 17) said workers at the city's recycling centre found the remains of a horse or pony on Saturday (December 14).
Police later told the Stray Ferret small parts of skin and several bones were recovered.
However, in an update today, officers have said the animal was actually a deer. No explanation for the misidentification was provided.
Today’s short update said:
Following further investigations, the animal remains have been identified as a deer. We are no longer appealing for information.
The Stray Ferret has asked North Yorkshire Police for further information, including why the appeal has been cancelled because the creature turned out to be a deer not a horse.
