A Boroughbridge woman raised a glass of lemonade to celebrate her 101st birthday yesterday (November 24).
Joyce Lynas attributed her long life to lemonade, which she has enjoyed a glass of every day since she was a child — and her birthday was no exception.
Joined by her two children James and Jennifer, the three toasted a glass of Joyce’s favourite drink and enjoyed a celebratory afternoon tea at her home.
Joyce said:
My mother used to make homemade lemonade, I can still remember the taste today. Ever since then I have had a glass a day. I like most lemonades, but the clear variety is my favourite.
Born in Sicklinghall, Joyce’s first job was milking cows at the Harewood Estate. She then worked at a shoe shop in Wetherby, before becoming a supervisor at a toy factory at Thorpe Park Trading Estate.
The 101-year-old now has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and is passionate about dancing, knitting, bingo and ironing.
Joyce lives at her home in Boroughbridge and receives daily visits from Springfield Healthcare North Yorkshire carers.
Jemma Ellis, service lead at Springfield Healthcare North Yorkshire, also attended Joyce’s birthday celebrations.
Ms Ellis said:
We loved celebrating Joyce’s big birthday with her and her family. She requested afternoon tea, which we were delighted to help make happen.
Joyce is never without a glass of lemonade and she always offers us a glass whenever we visit her at home.

Joyce Lynas
Joyce’s son, James, said:
We all enjoyed the afternoon tea – it was really nice to celebrate together. Thank you to the team at Springfield Healthcare for organising such a memorable afternoon for mum.
"If I live to 102, I would love to see the world from above in a hot air balloon", Joyce says. No doubt she would toast a glass of lemonade in the sky.
