An Iranian man has been arrested at a shop in Harrogate as part of a Home Office crackdown on illegal working.
A Home Office statement today (October 8) said an immigration enforcement team descended on Best Shop at 41 High Street. Starbeck, on October 3.
North Yorkshire Police officers supported the operation at the convenience store.
According to the Home Office, an Iranian male was arrested for breaching his bail conditions. He was granted further bail following an examination of his employment without permission.
Several hundred packets of cigarettes that were being sold illicitly were seized and the business was issued with a civil penalty referral notice.
The Home Office issues referral notices to businesses to inform them it is considering a case of illegal workers and issuing a fine. Firms can be charged up to £60,000 for each illegal worker.

A Home Office spokesperson said:
Illegal working undermines honest employers, undercuts local wages, and fuels the criminal industry of immigration crime. This government is determined to clamp down on that illegal activity in every sector where it occurs, including retailers.
Under this government, enforcement action nationwide has increased, with visits and arrests up by around 50% on the previous 12 months, and we will be stepping up that action further in the year ahead.
