Two Harrogate men have been sentenced for stealing tools from a vehicle.

North Yorkshire Police today said the theft was reported by the victim – a small business owner – at 7.30am yesterday (January 8).

The incident happened the night before at an unspecified location in Harrogate.

Police identified the suspects using CCTV provided by the victim, as well as assistance from the public, and both men were arrested by 4pm yesterday.

The men were charged and remanded in custody. Both pleased guilty when they appeared at York Magistrates Court today (January 9).

Robert Rutherford, 45, of Bower Street, was sentenced to four weeks in prison. This will be served consecutively to an unrelated case, which brings his total custodial period to 20 weeks.

He was also ordered to pay £239 in costs.

Joel Rayiru, 39, of no fixed address, was handed a community order which includes a rehabilitation activity requirement. He must also pay £199 in costs.

Detective sergeant Holly Grosvenor, of the Harrogate and Craven investigation hub, today said:

Theft of tools and equipment causes significant disruption to victims, especially small business owners who rely on them to earn a living. This swift outcome demonstrates our commitment to tackling these crimes and ensuring those responsible face justice.
