The managers of a pub near Harrogate say it has been “saved” after the change of ownership has finally completed.
Laura Davis and James Campbell, who have managed The Malt Shovel in Brearton since October 2022, told the Stray Ferret Inglenook Inns and Taverns is the official new owner of the pub, but the couple will continue to run it.
The couple said the pub is “back in safe hands”, after residents and regulars raised concern about its future.
They told the Stray Ferret:
The previous owners had the pub for more than 30 years. But because the sale process was so long, residents were concerned the pub would close if the sale didn’t go through.
Ms Davis, who is front of house, and Mr Campbell, the pub's chef, told the Stray Ferret they too felt concerned the sale could fall through and worried about the future of the pub at times.
However, Ms Davis said the couple want to reassure people now the sale has finally gone through, adding "the pub is saved".
The Malt Shovel, which dates back to the 17th Century, is currently undergoing a £10,000 makeover.
Ms Davis said the money is being used to “refresh the traditional features” and to add an “extra sparkle” to the pub.
She said:
Inglenook has now purchased the pub, but James and I are running the business. So, customers are still supporting a local couple when they dine with us.
It's a really exciting time for us. Some work is being done to the pub, but why fix what's not broken?
James Waddington, chief executive of Inglenook Inns and Taverns, added:
This is a perfect North Yorkshire inn tucked into the village of Brearton. It is impossibly pretty – and traditional throughout – we are delighted to put it back on the map.
The managers did, however, assure little will change in terms of the day-to-day operations and they will still be serving “top quality food” to customers.
Traditional pub food is served there including fish and chips, pie, meat and fish dishes and Sunday lunches, as well as lighter sandwiches.
A variety of wines, ales, ciders and spirits are also on offer, which can be enjoyed in the pub’s garden terrace.
The Malt Shovel is currently closed as refurbishments are carried out. It will re-open on Saturday, August 24.
Food will be served from 12pm until 2pm and 6pm until 9pm, Monday to Friday, and 12pm until 6pm on Sundays.
The bar is open until 10pm on Monday and Tuesday, 11pm Thursday to Saturday, and until 8pm on Sundays.
