Local solicitor identified as victim of fatal Brearton house fire

The woman who lost her life in a house fire in Brearton at the weekend was a prominent local solicitor.

Lynda Greenwood, 67, has been identified locally as the victim of the fire, which gutted the village home late on Saturday evening.

She founded Greenwoods Solicitors in Knaresborough in 1991.

The company has confirmed on its website that it will continue to provide legal advice and support to clients, but asked people to bear with the staff during a “very difficult time”.

After posting the news of Ms Greenwood’s death on its Facebook page, the firm received dozens of tributes from friends and clients.

One said:

“Shocking devastating news. A strong intelligent lady with a huge heart, tremendous sense of humour and thirst for life. Gone far too soon. She will be missed immensely.”

Another added:

“We only heard tonight and cannot express how sad we are to hear the tragic news. Lynda was a fab solicitor and a lovely lady – she will be sadly missed by us all. Our sincere condolences to those closest to her.”

Ms Greenwood grew up in Knaresborough, attending King James’s School while it was still a grammar school in the 1960s. She went on to complete a law degree at Kingston University and practised in Surrey, where she became partner in a law firm.

After having her daughter, she set up Greenwoods Solicitors in her home town. She specialised in commercial property, lasting powers of attorney, wills and probate.

North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched a joint investigation into the fire which claimed Ms Greenwood’s life. Neighbours in the village called firefighters around 10pm on Saturday but, despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woman dies in Brearton house fire

A woman has died in a house fire in the village of Brearton near Knaresborough.

Fire crews from Knaresborough, Harrogate, Ripon and Boroughbridge were summoned to the home by concerned neighbours at just after 10pm last night.

The home suffered severe fire, heat and smoke damage to the living room, hallway and front of the property, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A statement issued by North Yorkshire Police this afternoon sadly confirmed that a person had died:

Despite the efforts of firefighters and paramedics to save her life, a woman aged in her late 60s sadly died at the scene. Her family are being supported by the police.

Firefighters had to put the blaze out and ventilate the smoke-filled property.

There were no other occupants, and no neighbouring properties were damaged.

The police and fire service are asking people to come forward with any information that could help the inquiry.

Harrogate district house severely damaged in fire

Firefighters from four fire stations were called to a blaze at a house in the Harrogate district last night.

Crews from Knaresborough, Harrogate, Ripon and Boroughbridge were summoned to the home in Brearton just after 10pm.

The house suffered severe fire, heat and smoke damage to the living room, hallway and front of the property, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The rest of the property suffered moderate smoke damage.

Brearton is about three miles from Knaresborough.

The fire service’s incident log said “the incident remains open whilst the cause is investigated”.

It added:

“Crews used eight breathing apparatus, four hosereel jets, two main jets, thermal imaging cameras, nine-metre ladder, triple extension ladders, small tools and lighting.”

Nursery rises from the ashes of Smarties in Ripley

A new nursery run by many former members of staff at Smarties in Ripley has opened.

Smartie Land in nearby Brearton is a joint venture between Lesley Kelsey, who was a director at Smarties, and Viscount Mountgarret, who lives in South Stainley.

The nursery, which also operates a holiday club, is situated in former kennels on Viscount Mountgarret’s estate.

Ms Kelsey said the business, which opened this month and can cater for 62 children, benefited from its rural setting and spacious facilities.

She said:

“The closure of Smarties left a gap. When it closed we had about 90 children on our books.

“Houses are going up left, right and centre around Harrogate and they tend to attract families and we are here for them.

“Smarties was a one-off. It wasn’t part of a chain and this will be the same. You can offer a different service when you’re not part of a chain.”

Smarties, which opened in 1987 and catered for 52 children, closed last year.

The building is part of the Ripley estate owned by Sir Thomas and Lady Emma Ingilby, who decided not to renew the lease.

This month Harrogate Borough Council approved plans by Sir Thomas to convert the former nursery into a house.

Air ambulance called after three injured in Harrogate district car crash

An air ambulance was summoned to the Harrogate district today when three people were injured in a car crash.

The air ambulance was called to assist other emergency services at the scene of the collision on the B6165 between Nidd and Brearton.

The incident is believed to have happened at about 1pm this afternoon.

According to reports on social media, three fire engines and three ambulances were at the scene.

It is unknown how many vehicles were involved but Yorkshire Air Ambulance confirmed three people were injured.

A spokesperson said:

“Our paramedics provided on-scene medical support to three patients and those who needed further treatment were taken to hospital by land ambulance.”

The extent of injuries in unclear.

The Stray Ferret has asked North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for details but has yet to receive a response.
