Firefighters were called to Green Hammerton shortly after 8am this morning after a birds’ nest caused a freak fire.
According to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service‘s incident log, the nest fell down the chimney of a boiler, which then caught fire when it was lit.
Firefighters used water to extinguish the fire, which was confined to the base of the boiler.
Crews also “gave advice to staff on site”, the incident log added.
It did not say precisely where the incident took place or whether any birds were harmed.
Today also saw firefighters extinguish a small fire in woodland in Ripon at 3.10pm. The fire is believed to have been caused deliberately by youths.

Harrogate village cricket pavilion destroyed in suspected arson attack
Arsonists are believed to have destroyed a cricket pavilion in a village near Harrogate.
Firefighters from Harrogate and Knaresborough were called to Weeton Lane in Weeton at 8.40pm last night to reports of a shed fire.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log added:
“On arrival this was found to be a wooden cricket pavilion which was completely destroyed. Crews used one hose reel to extinguish the fire.”
The incident log did not give a cause of fire but villagers have reported seeing youths fleeing from the scene.
The cricket club in Weeton folded years ago and the pavilion had fallen into a state of disrepair.
Some frustrated villagers are keen to mount a campaign to restore the site to community use.
Man’s hand burned
In a separate incident later last night, Harrogate firefighters responded at 10.30pm to a smoke alarm going off in a house on Olive Grove in Harrogate.
The incident log said:
“This involved a candle which is believed to have been left unattended, causing smouldering to surrounding surface.
“One male suffered burns to his hand, received treatment from fire crew and will make his own way to hospital. Crew also ventilated property. Burn pack used.”

Firefighters called to Knaresborough pub
Firefighters are dealing with an incident at the Castle Inn pub in Knaresborough.
The aerial ladder platform was called to the pub, where smoke was seen coming from the roof.
Early indications suggest it may be a chimney fire. Eye-witness accounts so far do not report seeing any flames.
The pub, on Castlegate, is widely known as The Vaults.
North Yorkshire Police has reported road closures are in place.

Arson at Harrogate’s Kimberley Hotel: police appeal for witnesses
Police today appealed for witnesses and information about a suspected arson at the former Kimberley Hotel in Harrogate.
Eight fire engines were called to the derelict 90-bed hotel on King’s Road at about 11pm on Tuesday last week when smoke was seen pouring out of the front and rear of the building.
Half of the main building was damaged by smoke and an annex was destroyed.
A subsequent investigation by firefighters concluded the fire is believed to have been caused deliberately.

Six days on, North Yorkshire Police said in a statement:
“As part of the ongoing police investigation, we are appealing people to come forward about any suspicious activity at the location and particularly on the evening of Tuesday March 7.”

Chimney fire at Boar’s Head in Ripley
Firefighters were called to Ripley this morning to deal with a chimney fire at the Boar’s Head.
A fire was lit at the inn, which has 23 bedrooms, at 7.30am and began billowing smoke shortly afterwards.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was summoned at about 8am and the incident was quickly under control. There was no damage to the wider building.

The inn, which has a bar, snug and dining room, is part of the Ripley Castle estate.
Harrogate Fire Station used the incident to issue a reminder about the importance of regular chimney sweeping.

Police launch arson investigation after Harrogate Kimberley Hotel fire
North Yorkshire Police has launched an arson investigation after a fire last night at the Kimberley Hotel in Harrogate.
Eight fire engines were called to the blaze at the hotel off Kings Road at around 11pm. Half the main building was damaged by smoke and an annex was destroyed.
Firefighters closed the road for several hours.
A spokesperson for the police confirmed to the Stray Ferret that officers are now investigating the incident as arson.
They said:
“The incident has been confirmed as arson and a police investigation has been commenced.
“Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area, or anyone who has any information which would assist officers with their enquiries is asked to contact the force control room on 101, quoting reference 12230042171.”

“Crews used 20 breathing apparatus, four hose reel jets, one main jet and lance, lighting, thermal imaging cameras, small tools, door enforcer, hydraulic spreaders, reciprocating saw, drills and a triple extension ladder to fight the fire.
“The fire caused 100% fire damage to the annex measuring 10m by 10m and caused 5% fire damage and 50% smoke damage to the main building.”
The hotel off Kings Road has recently being subject to drug and crime concerns.

Eight fire engines tackle blaze at former Kimberley Hotel in Harrogate
King’s Road in Harrogate was closed for several hours last night due to a fire at the former Kimberley Hotel.
Eight fire engines were called to the large site, which has been the subject of drugs and crime concerns lately.
An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said the incident happened at about 11pm.
The eyewitness, who lives and works nearby, said the road was closed until about 2.45am.

Smoke inhalation killed woman in Harrogate house fire, inquest hears
A woman who lost her life in a Harrogate house fire died because of carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation, an inquest has heard.
Jayne Addyman, 54, died on January 7 last year at her home on Craven Street, which is close to King’s Road.
The inquest also heard alcohol intoxication was found to be a significant factor contributing to her death.
John Broadbridge, assistant coroner for North Yorkshire and York, concluded Ms Addyman died because of an accident.
The inquest was held on January 20 in Northallerton and Mr Broadbridge confirmed the details today to the Stray Ferret.
Firefighters from Harrogate and Knaresborough were called to Craven Street at 6.20am on Friday, January 7 last year.
Paramedics performed CPR but Ms Addyman was certified dead at the scene.

Harrogate firefighters respond to 2am hair straightener call
Harrogate firefighters were called out in the early hours of this morning to a report of a female locked out of her home where a pair of hair straighteners had been left turned on.
Fearing the straighteners could catch fire, the crew managed to get into the house via a first floor bedroom window — and discovered no straighteners had in fact been left turned on.
The call to the house on Hookstone Avenue came at 2.06am.
Earlier, firefighters from Knaresborough were called to a small fire in the open on Castlegate at 6.39pm.
They located the fire, which consisted of books and paper, and extinguished it using buckets of water.

Fallen power lines cause overnight fire in Knaresborough
Knaresborough firefighters were called out in the early hours this morning to a report of a fire in the open caused by power lines that had come down.
The incident happened on Bar Lane at 1.01am.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s incident log said:
“Crews located the damaged power line that was arcing with the ground.
“Crews handed the incident over to land owners to await the arrival of engineers to make the cables safe.”
